GUIDE

How to Build a Short Watchlist Without Fighting the Market

A good short starts with evidence of deterioration, not a bearish opinion. We prefer liquid stocks where several independent signals align: estimates or guidance are falling, price breaks support on real volume, relative strength is weak, and a clear catalyst can keep pressure on the name.

1. Require confirmation

A failed earnings gap, lower-high retest or breakdown followed by weak recovery is usually cleaner than shorting the first red candle. The invalidation should be obvious before entry.

2. Respect squeeze risk

High short interest can help a downside thesis if fundamentals are deteriorating, but it can also make the trade dangerous. Borrow availability, fees and options positioning matter.

3. Use options selectively

Puts can define risk when a catalyst creates asymmetric downside, but expensive implied volatility can make the stock itself the better trade. A good bearish thesis does not automatically mean a good put.

4. No forced trades

Some days the best short is no short at all. EdgeTrack keeps the downside list intentionally small so weak ideas do not get promoted merely to fill a section.
